In 2019, the water quality of the Yangtze River, Yellow River and Lancang River reached the highest standard in China, with 100 percent of each river's main stream and tributaries being classified between first-class and third-class, according to the monitoring. So far, the water quality of these three rivers has remained high for 12 consecutive years since 2007.

Sanjiangyuan, meaning "the source of three rivers," in northwest China, is the headwater region of the Yangtze River, Yellow River and Lancang River. It is renowned as the "water tower of Asia." Given its ecological importance, the Qinghai government has actively protected rivers, restored the environment and prevented pollution here.
