A man attacked several people with a knife on Saturday morning in the southeast French town of Romans-sur-Isère, killing two and injuring seven, the mayor said.
The man was later arrested, but his identity and motive remain unclear. The assailant reportedly had no ID papers with him.
The stabbing took place outside a bakery in a shopping mall in the downtown.
The French town is currently under a lockdown due to coronavirus, but people are allowed out to buy essentials.
And French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said security services were trying to establish the nature and circumstances of the incident.
