Answer Bank: Should we take medicine to strengthen our immune system against COVID-19?
By Gao Yun

The human body has a strong immune system with several lines of defense against infection from various pathogenic microorganisms.

Innate immunity is the first defensive line. Acting like a checkpoint, it prevents anything that the body cannot recognize from invading. This process can lead to inflammation, which sets off symptoms such as fever and fatigue.

If the pathogen breaks through the first line, the virus enters the cell, then multiplies and releases. At this time, adaptive immunity, another main immunity mechanism, will function to clear the virus by attacking the infected cells.

Generally speaking, there is no need to take any special medicine to boost your immune system. Balanced nutrition, proper exercise and a good mindset are the basic requirements to keep your immune system healthy.

1. Balanced diet: Eat both meat and vegetables, and cook with less oil and salt. Ensure sufficient energy and high-quality protein food intake, such as lean meat, eggs, soy, milk, fish, and shrimp.

Professor Zhang Wenhong, leader of the Shanghai medical treatment expert team, emphasized the importance of protein, saying "adequate protein intake is the first demand of our body to fight against the virus. Drinking enough milk, eating enough eggs, and having a steak periodically is recommended."

2. Moderate exercise: Take exercise both physically and mentally. Indoor walking, aerobics, Tai Chi, and yoga are all appropriate exercise.

3. Positive mindset: Self-adjust emotions. Emotional states like anger, anxiety, sadness, tension, and depression can all affect the immune system.

Drugs are not recommended to strengthen immunity. Carefully use medicine and dietary supplement and under the guidance of a physician.
