The mesmerizing Grand Prismatic Spring
CGTN

These stunning images taken by photographer Gerald Macua from a helicopter showcase the mesmerizing colors and contrasting textures of the Grand Prismatic Hot Spring in Yellowstone National Park in the U.S. state of Wyoming.

The Grand Prismatic Spring, the largest hot spring in the U.S., has a diameter of about 110 meters. At the center of the spring, the water temperature can reach over 87 degrees Celsius. The crystal blue color in the middle is because of the scattering of blue wavelengths, the same reason oceans appear blue.

The water gradually cools off as it spreads out. The distinct water temperature results in the vibrant color of each ring as each circle creates a different environment that allows different kinds of bacteria to thrive, ultimately forming the rainbow hues.
