The white-headed leaf monkey, or Trachypithecus poliocephalus, is native to southwestern Guangxi. With a population of less than 1,200, it has evolved into a unique subspecies in an area smaller than 200 square kilometers in the region.

South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is home to more than 1,100 kinds of terrestrial vertebrates, of which about 150 species are under state protection. Its coastal area is covered with 40 percent of the country's mangrove forests. The five-episode Southwestern Guangxi Series brings a glimpse of the region's special terrain and native wildlife.
