Flocks of relict gulls have migrated to Lake Hongjiannao in Yulin City in northwest China's Shaanxi Province since the start of April.

The gulls like to nest on islands in saltwater lakes and are picky about the environment. They won't stay if lakes dry up or water levels are too high.

The improved water quality and enlarged water area of Lake Hongjiannao provide a favorable breeding ground for them.

The relict gull is under first-class state protection in China, and classified as 'vulnerable' by the IUCN Red List.
