The April Lyrids meteor shower crossed the sky over Qingdao City in east China's Shandong Province on April 23.

An annual meteor shower, the Lyrids meteor shower is active from about April 16 to 25 each year. It is counted among the oldest known meteor showers, with records of sightings going back as far as 2,700 years ago. In fact, ancient Chinese are said to have seen this meteor shower in 687 BC.

The meteor shower is made up of particles given off by comet Thatcher. The rubble shed by Thatcher enters the Earth's upper atmosphere at 110,000 miles per hour.
