Staff at Nonggang National Nature Reserve have recently discovered footage of the endangered dwarf musk deer via their infrared cameras. The rare sight was captured on just a few seconds of video.
The dwarf musk deer, also known as the Chinese forest musk deer and endemic to southern and central China with some found in northern Vietnam, was previously hunted for its musk. Now, it is under first-class state protection in China and listed as "endangered" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
Musk deer are very alert and timid, so it is very difficult to spot and observe. According to those who have been working at the reserve for almost 30 years, it's the first time to see them through infrared cameras.
