Latest COVID-19 developments in Asia and Europe
India said on Monday morning that 46 new deaths and 975 new cases were reported since the previous evening across the country, taking the number of deaths to 872 and total cases to 27,892. The country has also seen a virus outbreak in its largest slum, the Dharavi, where 275 cases were detected.
Japan recorded 210 new cases and 12 new deaths in the 24 hours up to Monday at 10:30 local time. The county now has cumulative infections of 13,441 and a death toll of 372. According to local media, the government is also mulling extending the nationwide emergency which is due to end on May 6.
Also on Monday, the Japanese government decided to deny the entry of foreign nationals from an additional 14 countries including Russia, Saudi Arabia, UAE, starting Wednesday.
Japan's entry ban now applies to 87 countries and regions, and non-Japanese citizens who have been to these countries within 14 days before their arrival in Japan will be denied entry.
South Korea reported 10 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Monday, raising the total number of infections to 10,738. One more death was confirmed, raising the death toll to 243. Also, 8,764 patients have recovered from the disease and the country's total recovery rate stands at 81.6 percent.
Thailand on Monday reported nine new coronavirus cases and one death, bringing the country's totals to 2,931 cases and 52 fatalities.
Kazakhstan has decided to extend its state of emergency until May 11, but some coronavirus-related restrictions will be eased. The country now has 2,717 confirmed cases and 25 deaths as of Monday morning at 11.
In Europe, the number of Germany's confirmed coronavirus cases increased by 1,018 to 155,193, data from the Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases showed on Monday. The death toll rose by 110 to 5,750, according to the tally.
