On April 26, 2020, a group of 17 wild Asian elephants initially seen in Menghai County in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China's Yunnan Province, started moving towards Lancang Lahu Autonomous County.

Wildlife officials say continuous dry weather drove the elephants to cropland near the village in search of food. They are heading back to the rainforest now that rainfall has become more frequent, according to staff at the local wild Asian elephant monitoring station. This group of elephants has lived for a long time in the tropical rainforest on the border of Menghai County and Lancang County.
