French football's top two leagues, Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, have cancelled their 2019-2020 season after French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced Tuesday that football games – even behind closed doors, will not be allowed before September.

The PM said: "Big sporting events will not be able to take place before September. The 2019-20 season, notably for football, will not be able to resume."

Last week, the French Professional Football League announced plans to resume matches on June 17, as the Union of European Football Association has set a deadline of completing domestic leagues before August 2.
