Mother donating liver to dying son discovers she's not biological mom

If Xu hadn't insisted on donating her liver to save her cancer-stricken son, she would have never discovered that the person she had been raising for 28 years was not her biological child.

Abin, Xu's son, was diagnosed with Hepatitis B during a physical examination at age 2. Xu's family was confused because they were all healthy, and Abin had no contact with anyone outside the family before that age. In order to treat him, Xu and her husband took him to different hospitals for treatment every month.

On February 17, Abin was diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer. He is currently in a hospital in Nanchang, southeast China's Jiangxi Province. Due to the spreading cancer cells, he has received three courses of treatment and the family has spent more than 300,000 yuan (about 42,340 U.S. dollars). In order to pay the medical bills, Xu sold her car and listed the family's only home online for sale.

And, Xu decided to donate her liver to save her dying son. To everyone's surprise, during the examination, the blood test showed that she and her son's blood did not match. A report from the Justice Authenticate Center of Jiangxi Province revealed that Xu was not her son's biological mother.

The DNA test taken on March 26, 2020, shows that Mrs Xu is not the biological mother of her son with liver cancer.

For Abin whose condition growing more severe, a liver transplant is needed as soon as possible. The hunt for his biological parents began immediately, starting at the hospital where he was born.

Xu gave birth at Huaihe Hospital of Henan University, central China's Henan Province, in June 1992. Abin was one of three boys born on the same day at the hospital. After she gave birth, her son was taken to the infant room. The hospital staff mistakenly gave Xu the wrong baby.

After a tortuous search, Xu's family finally found Abin's biological parents and her biological son with the help of local police in Henan Province. Xu's biological son is healthy and is currently working in the police station as an auxiliary police officer.

But the joy of finding Xu's biological son and Abin's biological parents was quickly diluted by cruel reality. Abin's biological father, Guo, is in the ward of a hospital in Zhengzhou City, central China's Henan Province, accompanying his wife who is undergoing chemotherapy. Abin's biological mother, a Hepatitis B carrier, was diagnosed with liver cancer recently. Guo also has a daughter with mental illness.

"I will do whatever to save my kid," said Guo, who is considering transplanting part of his liver to save Abin. Even though Abin is not Xu's biological son, after 28 years of affection, Xu's family is still dedicating everything they have to save his life. Until now, neither of the two families has told Abin the truth, as they're worried that his condition may worsen if he becomes too emotional at this time.

But who is responsible for the tragedy? Because Abin's mother is a Hepatitis B carrier, he was supposed to be given a high-dosage Hepatitis B vaccine shortly after birth, but it was wrongly given to Xu's healthy son instead. "This has left Abin with such severe cancer at such a young age," Xu said.

On April 27, 2020, Kaifeng Municipal Health Committee urged Huaihe Hospital of Henan University to investigate the accident and find the responsible parties. Currently, the hospital is negotiating compensation with two families, and it may be resolved through judicial procedures if both sides cannot reach an agreement.

"They're both my parents," Xu's biological son told the media. "Guo's family treats me really well with care and love. I hope to resolve this in a way that doesn't harm either side of my parents."

Abin is still in the hospital waiting for further treatment.
