Another major decision about the 2019-20 Ligue 1 season has been made: Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) were crowned the champions of the French top football league this season, reported L'Equipe on Thursday.

After 27 games, PSG (22-2-3) have 68 points, which gave them a 12-point lead over the second-ranking Olympique de Marseille. Considering the huge difference in team strength between PSG and the rest of the league, plus the fact that most teams even played one more game than the leaders, it makes sense for PSG to receive the title.

It will be the capital heavyweight's third Ligue 1 championship in a row and the ninth in team history.

This season of Ligue 1 was first suspended in mid-March because of the COVID-19 pandemic and then had the rest of the games cancelled as the country's Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced on Tuesday that no sport event will be allowed until September, not even behind closed doors.

"The big sporting affairs cannot occur before September. The 2019-20 football season cannot return," said Philippe.

"We respect the decision of the French government. With agreement of UEFA, we intend to take part in the final phase of the Champions League in the places and dates where it will be organized. If it isn't possible to play in France, we will play our matches abroad and we will make sure of the best conditions of health security for our players and all our staff," said PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

PSG are unlikely to be dismissed because they still have the UEFA Champions League competitions. In the two-leg Round of 16 games, they managed to knock out Bundesliga's Borussia Dortmund to make the quarterfinals. PSG's current mission is to help their players stay fit until the Champions League returns, although no date has been decided upon yet.

According to previous reports, UEFA is eyeing July and August as the time to bring back the European competitions.
