Dariga Nazarbayeva, the eldest daughter of former Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, has left her position as speaker of the upper house of parliament (the senate), the presidential office said on Saturday. 

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has "terminated the powers" of Nazarbayeva in a decree, Tokayev's office said in a brief statement, without providing details. 

In a Twitter post, Tokayev thanked her for "active and fruitful work" as senate speaker.

Under the Kazakh constitution, the senate speaker is first in line to take the presidency in the event of the incumbent's resignation or death. 

Nazarbayeva had been appointed a senate deputy by Tokayev, who also nominated her for the speaker post.

Tokayev was speaker until March 2019 when Nursultan Nazarbayev abruptly resigned after almost three decades in power. 

Nazarbayev retains the post of the head of the country's Security Council and leader of the ruling Nur Otan party, and remain a member of the Constitutional Council. He also holds the title of Yelbasy, or National Leader. 

Tokayev, then interim president, won the central Asian country's presidential election with 70.96 percent of the vote in June last year.
