Beijing on Sunday rejected a report released by an American organization on the months-long violent protests that paralyzed China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) in 2019, denouncing its actions for "wantonly interfering in HKSAR affairs and China's internal affairs."

A spokesperson for the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR said in a statement that the report has whitewashed the extremist violence during the unrest and heaped accusations on the Hong Kong police who enforced the law dutifully with great restraint.

The report glorified the criminal acts of the opposition and extremists as a "fight over democratization" and mentioned nothing about the severe damage to law, order and the "One Country, Two Systems" principle, the statement said.

"It is full of lies and 'double standards,'" the spokesperson said according to the statement.

The spokesperson also stressed the high autonomy of the HKSAR: "The legal rights and freedom that people of Hong Kong enjoy are fully protected based on relative laws."
