A 21-year-old man pleaded guilty to rioting in Admiralty in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on Monday, becoming the first person to do so since the months-long social unrest last year plunged the city in turmoil.

The defendant, a lifeguard, is accused of taking part in a riot on June 12, 2019.

He admitted to hurling objects like helmets, traffic cones and umbrellas at the police cordon outside the LegCo entrance, adding that he pleaded guilty because he realized violence was not the answer, and he wanted to set a good example for other young people.

"If I had a chance to talk to young people, I would urge them not to resort to violence," a letter written by the man was quoted.

An illegal rally took place around Admiralty on the day, with some participants staying around the LegCo building until midnight. Protesters assaulted law enforcers with bricks, homemade spears and petrol bombs, injuring at least 22 police officers.

Sentencing was adjourned to May 15, according to the officials.

Those found guilty of rioting could face up to 10 years behind bars.
