After treating thousands of coronavirus patients, the makeshift hospital located at Madrid's biggest convention center closed on Friday, signifying a positive step in the country's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. There was applause and cheers, as the final patients were discharged from the makeshift hospital.

The 1,350-bed hospital treated about 4,000 patients and will remain equipped and ready to reopen in the event of a new outbreak.

Spain has been one of the countries worst-affected by the pandemic, but the number of hospital admissions has drastically reduced recently. On May 2, Spaniards were able to go out to walk or play individual sports for the first time since March 15, putting an end to one of the strictest confinement policies in Europe.
