Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman was sent to a hospital in Amsterdam and underwent a heart procedure after feeling pain in his chest, the Dutch football association (KNVB) announced in a statement on Sunday.

According to Koeman's business manager Rob Jansen, the 57-year-old experienced chest pain after a bike ride. He received cardiac catheterization, which involves the placement of a long, thin tube into a vein or artery, and will return home on Monday.

The former Everton and Southampton manager has been in charge of the Netherlands for over two years and helped the country to qualify for Euro 2020, which has been delayed to next year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We are shocked and wish him a good recovery," the Dutch national team's spokesman Bas Ticheler said.

Everton tweeted: "Everyone at EFC would like to wish former boss Ronald Koeman a speedy recovery."

Netherlands midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum added: "Wishing you soon recovery coach."

Meanwhile in Belgium, Roberto Martinez has reached an agreement in principle with the Belgian football federation to extend his contract to lead the country until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The 46-year-old's contract was up this summer but the Spaniard had already indicated in interviews over the last few weeks that he wanted to stay in charge in order to take Belgium to Euro 2020 next year.

With Martinez at the helm, Belgium had stormed into the European showpiece event in dominating fashion, by winning all 10 qualifying games, netting 40 goals and conceding just three.
