Live: Wild crested ibises in Shaanxi to hatch eggs
Updated 17:57, 08-May-2020

A pair of wild crested ibises named Honghong and Huohuo have left their nest in Yangxian County, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, after expecting new arrivals into the family since early April.

The expecting parents had gone through several fights to protect their nest at an early stage of the hatch while the 17-year-old mother ibis Honghong is at an advanced maternal age. Warmer weather may have also affected the quality of the eggs. As a result, three ibis babies failed to come out of the shells after 28 days.

The crested ibis is one of the world's most endangered species. In 1981, only seven wild crested ibises existed in Yangxian County. After years of continuous conservation, the crested ibis population in Shaanxi has exceeded 3,300 for the first time, and the global population has surpassed 4,000.

This year, almost 400 pairs of ibises have successfully hatched about 300 babies. CGTN has brought to you this hatching process since April 11. Shaanxi Broadcasting and Television Station contributes to this live stream.
