At least 15 people died in India's southwestern state of Maharashtra early on Friday when a goods train ran them over while they were sleeping on the railway tracks, an Indian Railways official confirmed in Delhi.
Two other people were injured in the accident and have been taken to a local hospital.
India has imposed a complete coronavirus lockdown since March 24 on the country's more than 1.3 billion residents.
The country's health ministry announced 3,390 new cases of coronavirus on Friday, bringing the total number to 56,342 with 1,886 deaths. The growth rate of infection is slowing yet millions of migrant workers are stranded far from home.
Local media reported that the people who died on Friday in the incident are all migrant laborers who worked at an iron factory in Jalna. They were trying to return to their rural homes in Madhya Pradesh amid the coronavirus lockdown.
"During the prevailing countrywide lockdown conditions, they were walking down to their hometown. On their way, they were exhausted of walking and decided to take rest on the railway tracks," Aurangabad's Superintendent of Police Mokshada Patil told local media on Friday.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed anguish at the loss of 15 lives in a tweet and said he is closely monitoring the situation.
Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said in a tweet that he was "deeply saddened to learn about the loss of lives in a train mishap in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. My heartfelt condolences to bereaved families."
