A Chinese nurse who participated in the prevention and control work against COVID-19 in Wuhan, the city in China hit hardest by the epidemic, wrote a letter to U.S. President Donald Trump.

The nurse from the respiratory department shared the story of Wuhan's fight against the virus with the president in the letter, expressing empathy towards the American people who are suffering from the virus.

The United States recorded 2,448 coronavirus deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 75,543, according to the latest real-time tally Thursday reported by Johns Hopkins University.

The nurse recalled the day when 42,000 medical personnel left home and joined the battle: "On the Chinese Lunar New Year's Eve, just like the Christmas Eve in America, we said goodbye to our families and hurried to Wuhan, without hesitation," reads the letter.

The nurse wrote that medical staff were reluctant to take off their protective clothing due to the shortage of medical materials.

"I just feel the same when I saw the American medics having to use plastic bags as protective clothing," the nurse wrote. "It broke my heart to see the bereaved family members of the American medical staff holding pictures and crying... What I am most pleased to see is that more and more patients are cured and discharged."

"Mr. President, this was what happened in Wuhan, and please send my respects to those American medics on the frontline, best wishes to the American people," the nurse wrote at the end of the letter.
