Chinese authorities on Sunday called for enhancing epidemic control measures in communities and extending the scope of testing for COVID-19 in Wuhan, the capital of the central province of Hubei, after a new coronavirus case was confirmed a day earlier.

A liaison group of the State Council joint prevention and control mechanism against COVID-19 visited a residential community and a nearby market in Wuhan's Dongxihu District to inspect epidemic prevention and control work on Sunday afternoon.

The group urged swift epidemiological investigations to find out the source of infection as soon as possible, and said that community-based control measures must be strengthened and the scope of testing must be extended.

Routes of transmission must be cut off as soon as possible, it said, urging local authorities to prevent a rebound of the outbreak and consolidate what has been achieved.

The case reported on Saturday was the first confirmed COVID-19 infection in Wuhan since April 3. Hubei health authorities said the infection was domestically transmitted.

As of Saturday, Hubei had reported 68,129 confirmed cases in total, including 50,334 in Wuhan, the hardest-hit Chinese city during the outbreak. The death toll from the virus in the province stood at 4,512, including 3,869 in Wuhan.

Wuhan ended a 76-day lockdown on April 8. Hubei lowered its level of emergency response from the highest to the second highest on May 2.

The liaison group was sent to Wuhan on May 4 to oversee epidemic prevention and control in Hubei and Wuhan in the new stage.
