Home to unique and endangered wildlife, Kangaroo Island is known as an ecological paradise. But in one of Australia's worst bushfire seasons, fires consumed half the island, and more – destroying homes and lives. Many animals like kangaroos and koalas were burnt to death. Those survived have had their habitats destroyed. Jack Barton looks at what locals and firefighters are doing to restore the land.
