The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Wednesday urged France to scrap its arms deal with the Taiwan region, so as to avoid harming diplomatic relations between Paris and Beijing.

China strongly opposes any military exchanges between foreign countries and the Taiwan region, which is our consistent stance, said spokesperson Zhao Lijian.

Taiwan authorities said last month it would upgrade the 25-year-old missile interference system of French-built Lafayette frigates.

Taiwan's media said the deal to buy the Dagaie MK2 decoy launcher from a unit of French group DCI is worth over 26.8 million U.S. dollars.

China has expressed deep concern to France, said Zhao, urging France to adhere to the one-China policy.
