Xi Jinping' WHA speech points way for world's anti-COVID-19 efforts

Chinese President Xi Jinping's speech at the World Health Assembly (WHA) meeting reflects the global recognition of China's achievements in fighting the pandemic, and is of great significance to strengthening international anti-COVID-19 cooperation, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

China's Deputy Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu made the remarks as he briefed reporters on key takeaways of Xi's speech and taking questions.

At the invitation of the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Chinese president delivered a speech via video link in Beijing on Monday at the opening of the 73rd WHA.

The Chinese envoy stressed the importance of Xi's speech as he noted the specialty of the meeting which was convened in the backdrop of the world coping with the most urgent public health crisis since the end of World War II.

The invitation by the WHO chief shows that "China plays a crucial role in international anti-pandemic efforts and that the international community has fully recognized China's achievements in pandemic control efforts," Ma said in the press release.

Ma summarized the advice and measures mentioned in Chinese president's speech on COVID-19 in four aspects, which are sharing experience in virus control efforts, calling for international cohesion, displaying sense of responsibility and pointing direction for future cooperation.

Elaborating Xi's talking points, Ma explained in the statement that firstly, China's advice on anti-COVID efforts are made based on different countries' social and economic backgrounds.

Secondly, he underlined that Xi has stressed the importance of international cooperation in fighting against the virus led by the WHO, and helping African countries should be on the top of the agenda.

Xi has also displayed China's sense of responsibility as he announced how China will help the world prevail the pandemic with five major measures including providing the world with 2 billion U.S. dollars of international aid, Ma added.

And last but not least important, Ma said in the statement that Xi's suggestion to fully evaluate the global pandemic responses for improving public health system is also provident.     

Guided by Xi's speech, "China will advance the international anti-COVID19 cooperation to defeat the pandemic and together construct a community of shared health system," the envoy concluded.
