A thesis published in the British journal Nature in April 2018 mentioned that the Wuhan Institute of Virology discovered a novel coronavirus originated from bats and the institute preserved the virus. To the question of whether or not this virus caused the COVID-19 pandemic, Wang Yanyi, the director of the institute, explained that many coronaviruses were called “novel” when they were first discovered, but in fact, they could be significantly different.
