Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho, who's lost his position in both Barcelona and Bayern Munich, may end returning to the Premier League. According to Le 10Sport, Arsenal are trying to sign the 27-year-old player.

The French news website revealed that Gunners' manager Mikel Arteta wanted to build his franchise around Coutinho whose skills and style of playing are both cut out to be a team commander. Arsenal should work hard negotiating Barcelona over the price since La Liga heavyweights are desperate to fund the transfer of Lautaro Martínez.

Coutinho was brought by Inter Milan to Europe in 2008 but was never given enough time at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. In his five years at Inter, he was sent to other teams on loan twice.

That's probably why Liverpool could introduce him with just 13 million euros (about 14.2 million U.S. dollars) in 2013. However, Coutinho met his career peak as a member of The Reds. In his five years at Anfield, the Brazilian midfielder scored 54 goals and 45 assists in 201 games. His performance drew attention from Barcelona which finally spent 145 million euros (about 158.1 million US. dollars) to bring him to Camp Nou.

Nonetheless, Coutinho got totally lost in Barcelona. Instead of commanding the team, he assisted Lionel Messi in offense, which included playing in the wing. Meanwhile, neither Coutinho's physical condition nor his habit of playing helped him as a qualified defender. After one and a half years, Barcelona sent him to Bayern Munich on loan with a 120-million-euro option (about 130.8 million U.S. dollars) to buy him.

However, Bayern's CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told Der Spiegel last Friday: "The option expired and we haven't activated it. We're going to plan our squad for next season and we'll see if he still has a role to play with us or not."
