On May 29, a villager recorded a wild "kitten" with his phone as he harvested mushrooms in north China's Hebei Province. A wildlife expert later identified the animal as a leopard cat.

The small wild cat was once common in northern and eastern China. But it came close to being listed as endangered after the population fell in the late 1970s. The reappearance of the leopard cat shows the environment of the region has improved, providing proper habitat and abundant prey.
