Red-crowned cranes are thriving in a wetland nature reserve in Heilongjiang Province of northeast China.

Zhalong National Nature Reserve is the world's largest breeding ground for the crane. Out of the nine crane species in the country, six can be found in Zhalong.

All nine crane species are under state protection in China, with red-crowned cranes under first-class state protection.
