Tropical Storm Cristobal made landfall in southeast Louisiana between the mouth of the Mississippi River and Grand Isle early Sunday evening, bringing powerful winds and heavy rains, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
Cristobal is located about 80 kilometers south-southeast of New Orleans, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 kph), the Miami-based weather forecaster added.
The NHC issued a storm surge warning – meaning "a danger of life-threatening inundation" – for the area from the mouth of the Mississippi River to Ocean Springs.
