Pandemic and sanctions wither pistachio production in Hama

The Syrian province of Hama is known as a pistachio heartland. But years of conflict have severely hit production, displacing farmers and traders. The industry saw a glimmer of hope last year when government forces regained control of some areas. That, however, has quickly waned, as Syria deals with severe sanctions and the COVID-19 pandemic.
