Chinese customs detect harmful organisms in logs imported from Canada

Chinese customs has detected live quarantine forest pests in imported Canadian logs, and has treated the logs in accordance with relevant Chinese quarantine laws and regulations, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Zhao Lijian said on Tuesday.

In accordance with international standards, the competent authorities of China have informed the Canadian side of the non-conformance and required to investigate the cause and take improvement measures, Zhao added.

Zhao stressed that it is the responsibility of the Chinese government to protect China's agriculture, forestry and ecological security. The measures taken by the competent Chinese authorities against Canadian logs are normal quarantine safety precautions, scientific and reasonable, in accordance with relevant Chinese laws and regulations and international practice.
