People from all walks of life in China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) have voiced their full support for national security legislation, expressing their desire for social stability and the recognition of the importance of safeguarding national security.

Executive and Legislative Council member Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee, former Hong Kong security secretary, said that the legislation is necessary to block gaps in Hong Kong's legal system.

"The legislation will stop some young people who are taken advantage of by ulterior motives from breaking the rule of law," she said.

The legislation will only target a small number of people who commit serious crimes endangering national security and the human rights and freedom of Hong Kong residents are still well protected by the HKSAR Basic Law,she stressed.

Legal experts in Hong Kong pointed out that Hong Kong should have completed the national security legislation stipulated by Article 23 of the Basic Law of the HKSAR at an early date, saying that the move will help safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests, as well as Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability.

Hong Kong's law enforcement departments and the Hong Kong Coalition have also spoke highly of the legislation, and said that it will help to stop the chaos in HK and bring peace and prosperity back to the global financial hub.
