On June 8, forest rangers at Hanma National Nature Reserve, north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, encountered a water deer during daily patrol.
The rare animal appeared about 10 meters away from the rangers and did not seem terrified of human presence.
Currently, water deer is listed as "vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List, and is under second-class state protection in China.
According to reserve staff, this is the first time that a water deer has been spotted at such short distance.
