At its prime time, Xuechuan School had around 600 students. Now, the school located in the arid and desolate mountains close to Dingxi City, northwest China's Gansu Province, is a window to the world of only eight students. Their teachers live in the school during the week, and in such proximity, they become a safe harbor for these children, who mostly come from low-income families and broken homes. Recognizing the major role the teachers and the schools play in these children's lives, the government has been implementing policies to attract young teachers to countryside schools and using new methods like online live classes.
