Beijing reports 22 new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases

The Beijing Health Commission on Sunday said that the city registered 22 new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases on Saturday, bringing to a citywide total of 227 infections involving Xinfadi wholesale market since June 11.

Three suspected cases and three asymptomatic cases were also reported in the same period. The newly-reported cases are from four of the Chinese capital's districts – 10 from Fengtai, eight from Daxing, three from Haidian and one case detected in Tongzhou. 

So far, 18 asymptomatic persons have been placed under medical observation in the city since June 11.

Over 2.29 million samples have been collected for nucleic acid testing in Beijing between June 11 and June 20, according to Zhang Qiang, a member of the city's epidemic-control office who oversees nucleic acid testing.

Beijing is conducting large-scale nucleic acid testing of food delivery people and couriers to reduce the risk of infection, said Zhang.

The national health authorities on Sunday said that 26 new COVID-19 cases were reported on the Chinese mainland on Saturday, of which 25 were local transmissions and one was an inbound case. No new deaths were reported.

The authorities in Beijing's neighboring Hebei Province reported three confirmed cases on Saturday, all related to Beijing's cluster infections.  

One of the three worked in the Xinfadi market. The other two were close contacts with previously confirmed cases in Beijing, the provincial health commission said Sunday.

Eight cases have been confirmed at a food company in Beijing's Daxing District as of Saturday, among which two are linked to Xinfadi wholesale market, Pang Xinghuo, deputy director of the municipal Center for Disease Prevention and Control, said at a press briefing on Sunday.

The newly confirmed cases are considered cluster infections linked to the market, said Pang.

Parts of Beijing upgrade COVID-19 risk level to high

Beijing has upgraded its COVID-19 risk level to high in Huangcun, a township in Daxing District, and Xincun Subdistrict in Fengtai District.

So far, Beijing has another 37 regions classified as medium-risk for coronavirus infection and two others as high-risk.
