Brazil's death toll hits 51,000, cases reach 1,100,000

Brazil has become the second country after the U.S. to register more than 50,000 coronavirus deaths, and over one million infections. Brazil's Health Ministry is now in the hands of a general who has no medical qualifications after two ministers, both doctors, were dismissed in the wake of disagreements with President Jair Bolsonaro's handling of the pandemic.

For the past month, the death rate has averaged 1,000 per day, the highest in the world, and a new daily record of more than 50,000 confirmed cases was set last week.

Experts have said actual case figures could be five or 10 times higher due a lack of widespread testing and poor reporting. President Bolsonaro has not only opposed lockdowns that most Brazilian states are defying, but is also under investigation for trying to interfere with police investigations to protect family members and allies.
