Under what circumstances does one receive a ring? To get married? An engagement? How about graduation?

China University of Geosciences (Beijing) has decided to present a tailored graduation ring to each of its graduate. Designed by the alumni of the university's Jewelry School, the rings will be embedded with different gems for different degrees.

According to the university, the ring shall be made of 925 sterling silver, plated with 18 karat platinum, and embedded with a crystal for a graduate of bachelor's degree, sapphire for master's and diamond for doctor's. Accompanying a letter from the president, it shall come with a trencher cap shaped package.

Moreover, the inner surface of the ring shall bear the school motto as well as the student's name and number. More than 4,000 graduation rings are currently in the mail.

"Behind the ring is special love for the university. May graduates avoid conceit and impetuosity and forge ahead toward their faith, mission and dreams," the university wrote in a Weibo post on Sunday.

As the news about the rings came out, many took to the social media platforms to express appreciation. Some netizens said they were "envious," with many hoping their universities could do the same. Some also lauded how the gems matched the levels of degrees. Some students also joked about their graduation gifts, while others said that although they did not receive a diamond ring when they graduated, the gifts they received from the university were meaningful.

Graduation gifts from other universities

While not all graduates receive diamond rings, many receive other meaningful graduation gifts.

This year's graduates of the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Sichuan University received a special graduation gift. To make up for the lack of a series of graduation activities due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the college organized the graduating class to jointly design 375 "graduation stamps." The seals are simple in appearance, with the names of each student at the bottom. They are also memorable gifts, the students said.

Northwest A & F University made 1,500 fruit dishes from the scientific research achievements of the College of Horticulture's Agricultural Experiment Station, including 3,000 catty of watermelon, 1,000 catty of cherry, and 1,000 catty of melon. Ma Fengwang, dean of the College of Horticulture at Northwest A & F University, said the special gift aimed at letting students appreciate their own scientific research achievements and inspiring graduates to make contributions to agricultural science.

During this year's special college graduation season, Beihang University's 2020 graduation ceremony will be held online. In order for graduates everywhere to remember this important moment, the university decided to send each of the 3,681 students who can not return to campus a set of academic gowns to attend the "cloud-based graduation ceremony" as well as customized graduation gifts.

Among the gifts is a special one from Zhongyang County, Lvliang City, Shanxi Province, which is also designated by Beihang University as a poverty alleviation area. To express their wishes to the students, more than 10 local villagers and students of the Paper Cutting Association spent three months to hand-make 4,000 pieces of paper cutting with elements of Beihang University and Zhongyang County, which became a commemorative gift for the class of 2020.
