In this month, Shanghai is marking one year since it began an ambitious environmental campaign aimed at reducing, reusing and recycling wastes. As China's commercial capital over the past two decades, the population of the metropolis – and their spending power – grew dramatically. The knock-on effect was a massive waste management problem and, in the end, the authorities said they just couldn't cope unless they changed to a greener strategy. Now it's hoped other cities across China can follow the lead.
