The Chinese Foreign Ministry has denounced FBI Director Christopher Wray's comments that China is the biggest threat to United States in cybersecurity, saying his statements are baseless and purely "political lies."
"How could you trust FBI's words?" Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian asked at Wednesday's regular press conference, responding to a reporter's question regarding Wray's Tuesday speech.
The top U.S. intelligence official said China has conducted so-called economic espionage and data theft, referring to China's "Fox Hunt" operation, an anti-corruption campaign targeting economic criminals who fled overseas.
Zhao said that China strongly opposes Wray's speech as it is full of political lies that exposed his Cold War mentality and ideological bias.
China's special operation is aimed at safeguarding the law and social justice, the spokesperson said, adding many countries have provided assistance as cracking down on transnational crimes is a common consensus shared by the international community.
He stressed that these kinds of attacks against China by certain U.S. politicians are attempts to shift attention away from domestic problems, and they are doomed to fail.
