(Can you tell what kind of bear in the video?)

There are eight species of bears are extant in the world, and the brown bear and the Asian black bear both can be found at the vast forests of the Changbai Mountains.

Despite their names, it still can be difficult to tell them apart because sometime the black bears can also be brown.

(In the video above, there's an Asian black bear in the forest.)

The Asian black bear has a distinct V-shaped patch on the chest, which resemble a new moon, hence it is also called moon bear, or white-chested bear. Compared with the brown bear, the black bear is more lightly built, while its lips and nose are larger.

Bears in the Changbai Mountains are endangered due to habitat loss and illegal poaching. A study measuring the population size of both bears in Changbai Mountain Nature Reserve from 1986 to 2010 showed a sharp decline.

The nature reserve and the local police have taken multiple measures to crack down on poaching and any forms of trade of the species for years to provide both bears a better environment to live. More footage of the bears have been recorded during recent years.

And now, can you distinguish the bears in the first video?

Journal of Changbai Mountain Species

Changbai Mountain in northeastern China is the major mountain range in Northeast Asia. Volcano, glacier, and primitive forest have provided an ideal harbor for countless flora and fauna. To better protect wildlife, Changbai Mountain Nature Conservation Management Center has settled many infrared cameras in the mountains, and from its footage, we can learn more about the secret life of species living there in the Journal of Changbai Mountain Species.
