Researchers in Haikou City in southern China's Hainan Province have discovered a new species of water fern that is unique to Hainan.

Water fern is a genus of aquatic plants consisting of about six species. Two of them found in China are under state protection.

The new species has been ranked as "vulnerable" by researchers due to its small population and habitat loss caused by human activities.
