China will take countermeasures against U.S. organizations and individuals who have shown egregious behavior on Xinjiang, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
Zhao Lijian, a spokesperson for the ministry, made these remarks after the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned one Chinese government entity and four current or former government officials in connection with what it called "serious rights abuses against ethnic minorities" in Xinjiang.
Xinjiang affairs are purely China's internal affairs, and the U.S. has no right to intervene, Zhao said, adding that the U.S. decision represents serious interference in China's internal affairs and is deeply detrimental to bilateral relations.
The Chinese government is unswerving in its determination to defend national sovereignty, security, and development interests, combat terrorist, separatist and religious extremist forces, and oppose any external forces that interfere in Xinjiang affairs and China's internal affairs, he stressed.
"We urge the U.S. to immediately revoke the wrong decision and stop any words and deeds that interfere in China's internal affairs and harm China's interests. If the United States insists on acting arrogantly, China will definitely fight back," Zhao warned.
Asked about when China will officially announce the countermeasures, Zhao said that relevant details would be known soon.
