A shutterbug captured a rare bird native to China in northern Hebei Province.

The reed parrotbill is a medium-sized bird with a round head, thick beak and a very short neck that gained its name from its parrot-resembling beak and habitat – reeds.

The species is under threat due to habitat loss.

French missionary and botanist Pierre Marie Heude collected the first sample of the bird in 1871.
