Southwest China's Yunnan Province has been hit by the invasion of swarms of locusts from Vietnam. 

The insects have swept across corn and banana fields in several cities in the province. 

Local authorities have sent out drones to spray pesticides.

The insect, named yellow-spined bamboo locust, is an original species in southwest China, but this year the migration of large swarms from neighboring Vietnam has become a threat.

The locust is smaller in size than the desert locust that has plagued over 27 countries in East Africa and West Asia since February.

Experts say that as the insects only travel short distances, and they will be confined to areas largely in southwest China.
