China launched a scheme to create a national park system and form a unified management system five years ago. Pilot projects are now nearly complete. Ten pilot national parks have been created, covering 220,000 square kilometers in 12 provinces. Three parks aim to protect Siberian tigers and leopards, giant pandas, and other wild animals and their habitats. Seven are to conserve natural ecosystems such as forests. The national park system aims to end the segmented management of nature reserves that cover multiple provinces so that the integrity of wild animals' habitats can be guaranteed. So what were the selection criteria for the ten national parks? And what changes will national parks bring to the environment? And what's the significance of creating these parks? Ma Jun, director of China's Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs, says the criteria are based on the national significance from the Chinese government and explains the details via Skype on CGTN.
