European soccer's governing body UEFA says it is confident Real Madrid's Champions League clash with Manchester City will go ahead as planned next week despite one of the Spanish side's players testing positive for COVID-19.

Real confirmed on Tuesday that forward Mariano Diaz had tested positive, casting doubt on his participation in the August 7 tie in Manchester.

"UEFA is in contact with the club and monitoring both the situation and decisions of the relevant Spanish authorities," UEFA said in a statement to British media.

"We are confident that this case will not affect the regular staging of the match in question."

Mariano did not join the Real squad as players returned from a post-season break to start training for their Champions League last 16 showdown. The 26-year-old has not appeared in that competition this season.

The Dominican international, who returned to Real in 2018 after a successful season at Lyon, played little in the recently finished La Liga season due to competition for places and injuries.

He made only five substitute appearances as Real won their 34th Spanish title, scoring once, an added time goal against Barcelona.

Real trail Manchester City 2-1 from the first leg of their last-16 tie before the competition was suspended in March.

The Champions League knockout stages from the quarter-finals onwards will be played as single legs in Lisbon.
