Spider lilies in full bloom in SW China

Tourists are thronging to Tanhua Temple Park in the southwestern Chinese city of Kunming to see 5,000 spider lilies in full bloom.

Spider lilies bloom from July to September, turning into a sea of sorts after rain in the provinces of Yunnan, of which Kunming is the capital, Jiangsu and Zhejiang.

The flowers are known for their somewhat strange appearance. Unlike other flowers that blossom with leaves, the flowers of the spider lily emerge with no leaves in sight. The leaves normally make an appearance after the flowers fade.
