Swiss prosecutors have launched criminal proceedings against Gianni Infantino, president of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), Sky News Sport reported on Thursday.

Swiss prosecutor Stefan Keller was appointed this month to investigate the case, which is in relation to the reportedly secret dealings between the head of the football world and Swiss Attorney General Michael Lauber.

Last week, Lauber offered to resign after a court concluded he covered up the meeting with the FIFA president and lied to officers probing into the corruption surrounding the organization.

After prosecutor Keller found indications of criminal conduct related to their meetings, the Swiss Office of the Attorney General (OAG) said Thursday in a statement, "this concerns abuse of public office, breach of official secrecy, assisting offenders and incitement to these acts."

Both the accused have denied any wrongdoing.

Infantino was elected president of FIFA in 2016, replacing Sepp Blatter, who resigned a year earlier over corruption allegations.

At the FIFA Congress in 2016, Infantino promised to "restore the image and the respect of FIFA, and everyone in the world will applaud us."

"We are finally going to ensure that we can once again focus on the beautiful game of football," he said at the time.
