A fish fossil around 100 million years old was found recently in a village in Danling County, Meishan City, in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

The fish is a lepidote, a species living between Triassic and Cretaceous, according to a zoological scholar from China West Normal University. The ancient fish body was found in stone in which it was inlaid millions of years ago. Its body, tail length, and height are about 22 cm, 5 cm, and 6.5 cm, respectively.

Lepidotes belong to the Semionotidae family under the Semionotiformes order. Judging from its size, the fish was around 150 grams, still at a young age. Local authorities said that it was the first time a lepidote fossil was found in the county. 

This discovery has important historical and practical significance for archaeological studies.
